Our Story
The Suva Rugby Union, established in 1913, is the oldest provincial union in Fiji and a cornerstone of Fijian rugby. The coveted Escott Shield, also founded in 1913, is Fiji’s longest-running rugby trophy, donated by Sir Ernest Bickham Sweet-Escott, the Governor of Fiji from 1912 to 1918. The union has a proud history of success, with its men’s and women’s teams consistently excelling at the domestic and international levels. The men’s team reached the final of the Skipper Cup competition in 2024 but fell short against Nadroga. Despite this, Suva continues to produce top talent for the national team. Suva’s men’s clubs, including Army, Police, Navy, and Lomaiviti, play a key role in the union’s success, providing intense competition and a platform for emerging players. Suva is also home to 20 clubs competing for the Escort Shield and 23 clubs vying for the Koroturaga Cup. The Farbrother Challenge, an annual competition, adds further excitement, with provincial teams, including Suva, battling for regional supremacy. The women’s division has experienced significant growth, with Suva’s women’s team performing strongly in the Fiji Women’s Marama Championship. Current holder of the Marama Cup and Pio Bosco Challenge Trophy. Many Suva players have represented Fiji internationally, including in the Women’s Rugby World Cup and the Fiji Women’s Sevens team.Suva Rugby’s club competitions are vital for developing talent, providing pathways for players to progress.
